Eleagnus Commutata: Wolf Willow Elaeagnus commutata, also known as the Silverberry or Wolf-Willow, is native to western North America from southern Alaska south to Utah. It typically grows on dry to moist sandy and gravel soils in steppes, meadows or woodland edges. These shrubs and occasionally small trees grow from 3-12 ft in height, with broad leaves, fragrant yellow flowers, and ovoid fruits covered in silvery scales, which are edible both cooked and raw. The fruit is a rich source of vitamins A, C, and E, and like legumes, can fix nitrogen. When Eleagnus Commutata is grown in orchards as a companion plant, it has the potential to increase fruit yields by up to 10 percent. The fibrous bark can also be utlilized to make ropes and clothing.
