Ficus Microcarpa: Chinese Banyan Ficus microcarpa, also known as Chinese banyan, is native in a range from China through tropical Asia and the Caroline Islands to Australia. In the mediterranean, where it is commonly cultivated, it can grow up to heights of 40 ft; however, in tropical climates it can grow much taller. The largest Ficus Microcarpa on record is in Hawaii, reaching up to 110 ft in height and 250 ft in crown spread, with over 1000 aerial trunks. The species occurs mainly at low elevations, and its natural habitats include tropical rainforests, river edges, coasts, swamps and mangroves. The tree is considered a major invasive species in Hawaii, Florida, Bermuda, Central America, and South America. Ficus. microcarpa is widely used as a street and ornamental tree in areas of coastal California. Its strong roots can lift sidewalks and pavements, and now that symbiotic fig wasp populations have been established in California as well, the trees produce fertile fruit which is feasted upon by birds, who subsequently spread the seeds.
